The PMDF-MR gateway is compatible with Message Router versions V3.1 through V3.3. It will not work with service levels of Message Router prior to V3.1.
In order for PMDF-MR to act as a Message Router replacement with ALL-IN-1, ALL-IN-1 V3.1 or later is required. Previous versions of ALL-IN-1 did not use any sort of documented interface to communicate with Message Router and thus cannot be supported in the Message Router replacement mode. (Older versions of ALL-IN-1 must instead be connected to a real Message Router, so that PMDF-MR can connect by way of Message Router.)
When using PMDF-MR to connect to Message Router, you will need to have Message Router installed on any system where PMDF and PMDF-MR are to reside and act as a local Message Router agent, or on any system to which PMDF-MR is going to connect as a remote agent. You do not need to have Message Router installed on the same system where PMDF and PMDF-MR are to reside as long as there is DECnet connectivity between the PMDF-MR system and the system actually having the Message Router mailbox to which PMDF is to connect; PMDF-MR can directly access remote Message Router mailboxes via DECnet.
When using PMDF-MR as a Message Router Transport Service replacement, there is of course no need to install any form of Message Router software. For such usage, however, PMDF and PMDF-MR must be installed on each node which would normally connect to Message Router; in particular, this includes each node which runs an Office Server server, a MailWorks server or an ALL-IN-1 Sender or ALL-IN-1 Fetcher.
You will need the MRGATE kit (version 3.1 or 3.2), the Message Router VMS MAIL gateway, if you want PMDF to be able to convert WPS and DX message body parts to ASCII. (ALL-IN-1 IOS often produces such body parts in the messages it sends. However, note that ALL-IN-1 V3.1 and ALL-IN-1 V3.2 have a Translate or ASCII Translate configuration option, respectively, which can be set to request that ALL-IN-1 itself do the conversion of WPS and DX message body parts to ASCII when sending messages.) This option of using the DCF utility is only available on VAX platforms, and is only useful for one-way conversion of WPS and DX formats to text. PMDF-MR has no problem relaying WPS or DX attachments in their binary form and PMDF's conversion channel can be used in conjunction with CDA or other converter libraries to convert WPS or DX attachments into a variety of other formats if need be. Note that you don't actually need to install MRGATE to get this functionality; it is the license and the kit, or more accurately, the object libraries in the kit, that are needed to provide the necessary document conversion functions. (See Section 39.2.2 for details.)
